If you're in the need of a really good book, I highly recommend The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. This book came out in 2009 so there's already another one and even another one due out next month! This one is reading at its best; the writing is so well done and a pleasure to escape into. I nearly finished it last night and would have if my eyes could have stayed open a wee bit more. The sleuth is 11yr old, Flavia, who is most passionate and learned about chemistry and who names her bicycle, Gladys. Set in an English village of the 1950s, it is a unique mystery and well worth your reading time.
Zack's 4th birthday is coming up this week and of course there has to be a party! Zack loves books and one of our favorites is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle so that is the theme and I'm pretty excited about trying to make a caterpillar shaped cake.

Would you recommend this to a 10-year old girl who is ready to graduate from Nancy Drew?
@Michele ~ As a barometer, I'd have no problem with my Ben, who is 11, reading this book but he probably wouldn't because the main character is a girl. LOL Your daughter would probably enjoy it if she likes Nancy Drew books! I haven't found anything so far (nearing the end so don't know the end yet) in the story that is shocking to a younger age but will happily email you a firmer opinion after finishing it :)

Thanks! My red flags are smart mouths, potty mouths, and "mature subject area." :) We have plenty of smart mouths and potty mouths around here already! ;)
This is one of my favorite books and Flavia is one of my all-time fave characters. The second book took a little more time getting into it but was still very enjoyable. Can't wait for the new one coming soon. I'm glad to hear you are enjoying it.
I just picked this up at a library book sale and am looking forward to reading it. And I just read that Eric Carle is coming out with a new book - his first in four years. Happy almost birthday to Zack!
Thanks for the book recommendation. I've haven't read anything by this author yet. I made a caterpillar cake for my daughter's birthday when she was little. I did cupcakes, laid them out on a foil covered board, frosted them pale green, I used licorice whip cut up for antennae. I think I used gumdrops for eyes...
Happy Birthday to Zach!
I tried to read that one a while back and couldn't get into it. If YOU like it, I'll try again though.
You must be mistaken...there is no possible way that Zach is almost 4 years old! LOL Happy early birthday Zach!
I've been wanting to read this book since it came out. I need to pick it up - thanks for the reminder! And I finished my Camille's French Sampler - I just posted a photo of her on my blog. Thanks for another wonderful design!!
Flavia is the best! The 2nd book in the series was good, too. Can't wait for #3.
Happy b-day Zack.
The author of that book was on Book Radio. It took him a long time to name her. It was an interesting story.
Will it be a chocolate caterpillar cake?
Happy Stitching and Reading!
I started this book, and then set it aside because I was already reading something. I really need to get back to it! Good to know you liked it! :)
I'm so glad you enjoyed the book, Tanya! I fell in love with Flavia a few months ago but haven't gotten around to picking up the second book yet--maybe when the third comes out I'll catch up. Agreed--writing and reading at it's best.
Thanks for the visit the other day! :)
