merry halloween

The rain stopped, somewhat, for the trick or treating hour but picked up a wet pace once we were back home, thankfully. It's nice and cozy inside now. Ben is sick so he had to miss out on the trick or treating this year, poor guy. Although he did instruct Zack to get plenty of candy so he would still have some. Zack happy halloweened everyone he saw and yelled trick or treat at every door so as to be sure he was heard. He would then turn and say thank you for the candy until they responded back. We started at my brother's house and then stopped in at Mom's (I loved her garland on the door!) and then by my grandmother's house before doing a little zig zag walk down our own neighborhood for sweets. We then headed for home for real food ... hope your night was a fun one!

Zack + Pumpkin Patch = FRIDAY FUN!!!

There was mud. Lots of mud. The squishiest kind. Hay ... should have been more hay to cover the mud. But there was fun. Oodles of it amid the noise of kids everywhere. Zack and I hayrided (new word), ran through the mud, zoomed down fast slides, gazed at smelly animals, dodged past noisy school field trip crowds, and lunched on hot dogs, cider and pretzels. I knew it would be busy today, the last day before Halloween, but we had to get there, my z and me.

new

Santa stopped by while I was out today and left darling PRIMITIVE CHENILLE CANDY CANES! They've been added to the website ... set of 5 for $4.50 ... shipping within US included. They are really sweet ~ great to add to ornaments, garlands, tabletop trees, etc. Opening the box of these Christmasy goods sure got me in that holiday frame of mind ... it will be coming soon!

Some more Jane Austen inspired Moda fabric has been added to the website too. November 1st (that's the plan ...) will be the release of two new patterns and then next week is The Needle Retail Show beginning Nov 5th and running through Nov 8th.

Ben has a ballgame tonight. Only two more of the Fall season. It's that damp cold type weather and cloudy so we'll see how long Zack and I last before heading in search of food and warmth. Now to make sure that uniform is clean ...

wednesday sewing

Several items lined up at the sewing machine this morning. Here is a finish for a friend and it came out sweet ~ she stitched this JBW Designs 'Navy' for a Christmas gift and I made it up as an ornament for her to give. The charms are such fun!

how goes it

Remember last Tuesday? Well ... today after Zack and I gobbled several ginger cake sample pieces under the tent of Grace's Pastries while rain fell around us at the farmers market, it was clear that one of these divine fresh cakes was coming home with us. Grace's Pastries is online if you want to check them out, here's their website linky! It's a rainy day and a piece of this moist goodness will be perfect with a cup of tea later.

I'm about to start a new design ...

Oh and have you met my new best friend?

a funny funny

While I was making dinner ... more on that later ... Ben and Zack were making Halloween crafts using those fun sticky foam pieces in shapes of pumpkins, bats, etc. Well, Zack couldn't quite get the concept of taking the paper off the back to stick foam to foam as he's used to stickers you peel and stick. Imagine. Ok, so these buggers have paper on the back and Ben was patiently trying to show Zack how to pull them off and then stick. Zack didn't have the time for this and he told Ben that he was going to "go get my hammer, be right back, Ben" and when he returned, he proceeded to wham each sticker down to the foam. It was hilarious!

Ok, now dinner. I had planned to make chili tonight. 70 degrees, or just about, and not chili weather. So, I thought about these turkey, apple and brie panini sammies which sounded good and quick so that I got busy. I don't have a panini press (oh Santa!), this isn't Giada's kitchen so I had to cover the bottom of a heavy cast iron skillet with foil (no brick, get the idea) and that was to be the 'press'. All through this process I was imaging what DH would think about this girlie type meal when he got home but I kept going to town on it. Ok, so I layered the olive oiled bread with brie cheese, apple slices and turkey. The recipe called for apple butter and that might have been the best addition that I didn't have but oh well. The sammies were really quite high and they landed pretty well into the grill pan and then I enjoyed smashing them down with the heavy cast iron pan. They cooked QUICK (can you say, burn baby burn?) so I turned them and about that time DH came home. The look on his face was priceless as he examined the contraption I had mustered to make the meal. He, smart man that he is, walked out of the kitchen so I continued to turn the sammies to achieve the nice dark color they were on the other side and smoosh them down again. They cut very prettily but the taste just wasn't as good and certainly weren't like any panini sandwich I've had at Panera!

I didn't force the boys to try this disaster so hastily made them something else. Ben couldn't remember what I called these sandwiches so he called them panorama, Zack just laughed, DH said there was too many tastes going on and that it was complex. I had used raspberry preserves instead of the apple butter for some moisture but that didn't help at all. Yepper doodle, it was disappointing. Some nights you just shouldn't cook. Needless to say, I'm starving.

new needfuls

I've added a few more items to the website yesterday and today ... heart thread keeps ... heart and round thread rings ... more scissors ... and super, spooky cute Primitive Old Black Cats which just came in - I should have ordered more! Anyway, just a few in stock but they are adorable when displayed next to The Old Black Cat Sampler! Website has all details. Lots to do before Zack wakes from his nap ... hope your day is a splendid stitchy one!

models on field trip

The MOPS Marketplace was fun this morning ~ always fun to meet other moms who stitch ... or should I say, get time to stitch! The table went together pretty well last night and take down is always much faster...esp with a hungry toddler waiting to leave. Took in some Krispy Kreme pumpkin spice donuts for their bake sale.

Thank you to those who stopped by my display today and I hope you are pleased with your purchases. The note cards were pretty popular. Here's a looksee at my display!

I added a few more exclusives to the website today. Check the NEW page! Now ... back to my tea before picking up the 5th grader and then it's on to Friday ...

here's mine

Ok, so I followed Monique's lead... Type your first name preceded by the word "unfortunately" into Google and see what you get!

Here are some of mine ...

Tanya is almost 12 now and she has become a real American.

Tanya is actually quiet (that's what it said!) a smart and logical girl when she sits down and thinks.

Tanya had just had her tonsils removed, so conversation was fairly one-sided.

Tanya was having some troubles with her ear monitors…

Tanya and Abby were not able to find other children interested in stamp collecting.

Tanya almost does not speak any Russian

Tanya did not do very well on her next quiz.

Tanya had to go to work without a shower.

Tanya was the first person to christen the boat by being seasick.

Tanya didn't leave me a link to her blog.

more jane austen trinkets...

More Jane Austen Trinkets were added to the website this afternoon. These make lovely gifts for friends or for yourself! The updated ones can be used as a pendant so you can add it to a chain and wear Jane every day or for a special party. I love mine!

spinach pinwheels

Here's the recipe for the spinach pinwheels ~ simple to make and really good! Pillsbury now makes seamless crescent dough which I now use which makes it extra easy to fix. Enjoy!

Spinach Pinwheels
2 (8 ounce) packages refrigerated crescent rolls
1 (7 ounce) package garlic herb cheese spread (I use Aloutte brand)
1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Split crescent dough in half along center perforation. Flatten one rectangle, sealing perforations. Spread with 1/4 of the cheese spread and sprinkle with spinach. Starting with long side, roll dough up, rolling back and forth several times to seal edges. Cut into 3/4 inch slices (about 15 slices per roll). Arrange the slices one inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Continue making the crescent roll ups until all of the ingredients are used. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until lightly browned. Serve immediately or keep warm on a warming tray.

halloween came early

There was plenty of rain today to set the mood for our stitchy Halloween luncheon. Mom hosted and it was a spooky delight! She had soup (ok, not a big fan of the soup, more of a chowder girl but I ate it, Mom!, that counts) and we all brought something to go with it. I made spinach pinwheels, my grandmother brought cornbread, Betty brought salad, Liz brought the shrimp dip & chips, and Nancy brought brownies.

As you can tell from the photos, the table was themed wickedly and fun. It was the perfect way to spend a dark, wet Saturday. Inside with food and friends! Mom decided we would all stitch Sampler Stitches of the Thread by The Primitive Needle and put our initials at the bottom ~ great idea!!

I made a necklace to wear for the occasion!

15 October 2009

stuffed. shells.

Perfect night for them ~ it's still raining and the heat is cranked. High tomorrow 44 degrees! This is crazy weather ... the squirrels have been scampering their wet-selves like mad all day. Pesky pumpkin-eating squirrels. Here's the recipe ... don't worry, it's not stuffed with squirrel. The recipe is one my best friend from high school found in a well-used cookbook and it's become one of our family favs through the years. I always think of Amy when I fix it. She and I could put away two shells because back then, they made the jumbo pasta shells bigger. Really big. Now, they keep shrinking! Today when I opened the box, I know it's the smallest jumbo sized pasta shell I ever saw. It's just wrong. They shouldn't call them jumbo ~ heck, they're going to be the size of sea shell macaroni before too long. Ok, so here's the recipe.

Stuffed Shells, my way

1 lb hot sausage
1 lb ground beef (80/20)
generous amount of garlic powder
1 package jumbo pasta shells
1 jar Classico Tomato & Basil sauce
3/4 cup Italian bread crumbs
1 cup Parmesan cheese
2 cups Mozzarella cheese, shredded
1 egg

Brown sausage and ground beef together. Add seasoning. Drain and set aside to cool down.
Cook jumbo shells in salted water and drain. Run under cool water so you don't scorch your hands when stuffing!
In a large bowl, combine cooked meat mixture, bread crumbs, egg, Parmesan cheese and 1 cup of Mozzarella cheese. Pour 1/2 of sauce into a 9X13 pyrex dish. Fill shells with generous portions of mixture. Place each shell in dish and once all are in, cover with rest of sauce. Sprinkle with remaining Mozzarella cheese and cover with foil.
Cook in 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes.

Thank you sweetly for all the comments on my recent picture, by the way. Off to cozy up with a book and listen to the rain hit the windowpane ...

note cards, new!

Also added to the website are The Sampler Girl Note Cards! These showcase a design of mine, either in full format or close up ... each is accompanied by envelope and tucked into plastic with a sticker seal for safekeeping until use. Sold individually or in sets of four cards per design.

Check website for all details!

lately

Zack talks a lot ... here are just a few of my favorites from this week. It's only Wednesday, right?

*That's a TRUCK not a CAR, Mama.
*Mama, you look like a Princess.
*I don't want to be clean.
*Dinosaur is looking for his belly button.
*There's nothing to scare me.
*Kiss it better for me.
*My sleepies don't work.
*I like your hair, Mama.
*Wanna race cars?
*Where's my fork? Oh it was hiding from me.
*No, I can do it myself.
*Did you see Zackie at the window?
*Can I have a snack, please? I need a drink.

say cheese

I hate having my picture taken. I like having a prop with me but the usual ones are busy ~ one's in school, one's napping and the other is purring in my favorite chair. I needed my picture for something (upcoming!) and haven't been able to decide on a photo so took a few today and decided on this one. Reading glasses always make you look intelligent so I kept them on.

Now moving on...picture done. Whew. Back to work!

chick flick

If you haven't seen My Life in Ruins, it's a great little addition to the chick flick library. It just ended and I laughed and cried and oh, it was hilarious. Great writing. I know the reviews weren't that great when it came out but they were wrong, it's wonderful!

To see the trailer of it, click HERE.

fireman zack

Today was open house at the Fire Station. It was drizzly, gray and so windy but that didn't dampen the excitement one bit for Zack. He found much joy in making certain we did everything offered at least five times but I think we were in the hose line more than that. Very cool and very important stuff to know for fire safety. He had the stop, drop, and roll exercise on the mat down pretty well with a lot of rolling going on.

Zack wore the fire hat for awhile but it kept blowing off in the wind. When he was on the truck, he put it back on, just like he wears all hats ... with the front in the back. Funny fella.

when you walk in

Since several had asked to see the wreath I made this week, here it is. I'm not a wreathmaker expert and won't win any awards on floral art but give me a glue gun and I can be creative. The wreath is simple and sparse, I guess ~ we were supposed to share the assortment of supplies given so I didn't want to hog the green leaves even though they were my favorite. Raffia boggles my mind so I just made a bow with some of it.

As you continue through the house, you will see little cars and little feet. Watch your step!

news, Jane news

The Jane Austen Centre in Bath, England, now sells my Jane Austen patterns!!! They are releasing them several at a time and the first batch were featured in their newsletter today. Very exciting and big news for me to share. Check out their website for all things Jane.

This morning was MOPS and a highlight of my month. For moms who don't know about MOPS and are yearning for a wonderful mom's group with great childcare, check out their website to find a chapter in your area, or start your own! It is an international organization. I used to participate when Ben was small and now I'm back into it again. Today's craft was to make a Fall themed grapevine wreath and I'm pleased with how mine turned out. I asked Zack to hold it for a minute while I tried to find my car keys in a well stocked purse and he proceeded to stand in the middle of it and then rolled it down the sidewalk SO looks like my wreath has many uses. He was about to throw it when I found my keys and took my wreath back from active hands. It looks good, nice and still, on the door now.

Enjoy your Thursday!
